RABBIT CARE

Cages

Cage sizes should be pretty big, you want your rabbit to live comfortably and be able to do zoomies and binkies. I'd say your rabbit should be able to stand on its hind legs without touching the top of the cage. the cage should also be big enough for your rabbit to lay down and stretch. There should be room for a litter box, food and water bowls and toys. Wire bottom cages are painful on their feet and can cause sore hocks. If free roaming a rabbit is possible, you should always try. Make sure you bunny proof the area that they are living in, rabbits will chew on furniture, wires, and will eat any food left out.

Diet

Their diet should have hay available at all times because it stops their teeth from over growing, prevents GI stasis, and it is high in fiber, which they need. Alfalfa hay is for bunnies under 6 months it is too high in calcium and too rich in protein, for adult rabbits. if they are fed alfalfa hay as adults they could become obese. Grass hay like timothy is great for adult rabbits. You should feed 1/8 cups of pellets to adult rabbits and unlimited to bunnies under 6 months. Lettuce should be given daily but introduces slowly to not cause diarrhea and illness (lettuce should not be given to rabbits under 6 months). You should feed 1-4 big leaves of lettuce and 2-5 different kinds.

Monthly care

Rabbits should get their nails clipped at least monthly, you should use pet clippers that curve with their nails, if you use clippers for humans it may crush their nails. Don't cut past the quick which is the red part in their nail it can cause pain to the rabbit, its easier to see the quick on rabbits with white nails and you might have to use a light to see it on rabbits with black nails. You should also brush them whenever they are going through a shed, rabbits groom themselves and will eat a lot of their hair, it can cause blockages and they can develop GI stasis. You should give your rabbit monthly vet checkups to make sure they don't have any injury's or sicknesses, rabbits will hide if anything's wrong because they are prey animals.
